Mrs. Slaten's Home Page
Hello! I'm Mrs. Slaten: CA transplant, English teacher, book and baseball fanatic, and farm girl.
Subjects: I teach 8th, 9th, 10th, and 11th grade English for the 25/26 school year. | ![]() |

Education: I earned my Bachelor of Arts degree in English at Vanguard University of Southern California and my single subject teaching credential (English 7-12) at Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo, California. I have a Master of Education degree with a focus in literacy from Concordia University in Seward, Nebraska, and I recently completed 3 credit hours for a secondary foundational literacy course through TNTP and Wayne State. This is my thirteenth year teaching here at Southwest.
Biographical Information: I was born and raised in a small town in Southern California. I started riding horses when I was two years old, competing in gymkhana and rodeo as I got older. I have always enjoyed reading and being outdoors, preferably at the same time. My husband, a former Marine and current paramedic/firefighter, and I made a "temporary" move here in 2013, but we each started our dream careers and fell in love with the Midwest culture, so we're here to stay. I still root for the Los Angeles Dodgers AND San Diego Padres--never miss a game!
